Chapter fourteen
Bound to Death
Myles dragged the brown bag behind him, letting the leather scrape along the forest floor, occasionally slumping over a rock or cracking fallen branches.
âDo you want me to carry it?â I asked, cringing at the sound, watching him maneuver it.
âNo. It is okay. We are almost there.â His tone added a certain sharpness to the air.
We walked with minimal words in the chill of the night, distracted by our own muddled minds. The deeper we got into the forest, the darker it grew.
The moonâs dim light barely reached the forest floor, leaving us to our own devices. I held the lantern close to me, the light making me feel a shade safer.
âWhy did you tell me I should be scared of the dark?â I said, with a slight falter in my voice.
âYou said it yourself. Inalians are creatures of the night,â he said, dropping the bag. âStep into the darkness, and you step into their territory. And though they have not been to Elphorea, or even the in-between in fifteen years, you never know when they will make an appearance. Especially now,â Myles continued, making me colder than I already was.
He stopped abruptly after miles of walking, turning to me with an ominously stiff face.
âOkay, start digging,â he commanded, looking at me with expectancy. I fell onto my knees, allowing my fingers to sink into the dank mud.
We both got our hands dirty, creating a six-foot-deep crater. I hesitantly placed the bag into the hole, and with a thud, dust and loose dirt flew from the freshly dug grave.
I was not quite sure what to say, not even sure to whom I was speaking.
All I could do was express my deepest regrets, hoping they found everlasting peace in whatever form of afterlife they believed in, if any.
After standing above the bag for a while, Miles tentatively reached over and hovered his hand above my back.
After a moment, he placed it gently on me, spreading much-needed warmth to my body. I closed my eyes, feeling his touch as he spread his fingers apart, slowly working them down toward my waist, where he gripped me tightly.
Myles stood right beside me, supporting me.
He hated every second of it; who in their right mind wouldnât? But I could tell he was trying his best to remain strong and composed for me. The moment he broke down, I would have crumbled into a million irreparable pieces.
After a while of standing just like that, I got back down in the dirt to fill the crater. I couldnât believe any of this was happening. I felt myself slowly slip out of my body while pushing dirt back into the hole, not able to manage the intense emotions chipping away at me.
Myles pulled a clear vial from his trouser pocket, uncorked it, and began drizzling it on the surrounding area. A strong scent instantly found its way into my nose, and it took me a moment to realize what I had been smelling was vinegar.
âWhat are you doing?â I whispered, even though we had been the only ones out there.
